Being physically active is good for people with diabetes – whether it is type 1 or type 2.
Regular physical activity can play a key role in managing diabetes.
Physical activity doesn’t need to mean workouts at the gym or intense exercise. Even small amounts of regular activity can be beneficial. Before trying any new exercises it is important to check with your GP first, they can help you decide what is safe and consider any complications. If you’re not currently active, it is recommended you start small and build up your levels gradually.
If you use insulin or other medication that lowers your blood sugar levels, it’s important to check them before and after exercise.
Visit Diabetes UK, Exercise and blood sugar page for more information.
Diabetes can make it hard to know what type of activity to do, or how you will feel when doing it. If you’re new to exercising it is important to start gradually and build up levels of activity slowly. Listen to your body and do what is right for you. There isn’t one particular type of physical activity that’s best with people with diabetes. Anything that gets your body moving will have a positive impact. Finding something you enjoy, and that you can fit into your routine, can mean you will be more likely to continue being active.
