Why Try it?
While you might associate yoga with impressive physical postures, its true essence lies in cultivating balance, strength, and inner peace. There are various types of yoga, from slow and meditative styles like Yin Yoga to dynamic and physically demanding forms such as Ashtanga.
One of the most popular styles for beginners is Hatha, which focuses on foundational poses, controlled breathing and relaxation techniques. Whether you’re looking to build strength, increase flexibility, or simply unwind after a long day, yoga is the perfect activity for a holistic approach to wellbeing.
Yoga is also a great activity during pregnancy to help manage the physical and mental changes during this time. Look for a prenatal class, or notify your instructor you are pregnant so suitable adaptations can be made to ensure all postures are safe for you. If you can’t find a class near you or want to try is at home first the Active Pregnancy Foundation provide free yoga for pregnancy videos on their website.
Wheelchair users can access online yoga classes with WheelPower. Visit their website to book and for more information.
What do I need to take part?
You don’t need any prior experience to take part, and you don’t need to be super flexible. Just look for a beginner friendly class, and speak to the instructor beforehand if you have any medical conditions or injuries and they will be able to adapt postures for you.
Some sessions may require you to bring your own mat, but many places will be able to provide one and other equipment (such as bolsters or blocks).
