Ann

At 83 years old, Ann Bigger from North Hykeham, is proving that it’s never too late to take on a new challenge. Earlier this year, Ann began learning the martial art of Tae Kwon Do, joining a brand-new afternoon class for older adults launched by her son, Mark Bigger.

Mark runs the North Hykeham Tae Kwon Do Club, which trains at One NK in North Hykeham. With years of experience teaching children, teenagers, and adults, Mark recently decided to introduce classes specifically tailored to older adults. His goal was to create a welcoming, accessible environment where retired people can experience the many benefits of Tae Kwon Do -regardless of age or fitness level.

Ann initially though she’d give the classes a go to support Mark. But what began as a gesture of encouragement quickly turned into a personal journey she never expected. “I thought I’d just give it a go,” Ann said. “I didn’t dream it where it would lead to to!”

Driven by her determination and enthusiasm, Ann soon found herself preparing for her first grading, and just a few months in, she proudly earned her yellow stripe belt.

A workout for body and mind

Tae Kwon Do has brought Ann more than just a new hobby. Physically, it’s helped her build strength, balance, and overall fitness. Mentally, the challenge of learning and remembering the series of movements has given her brain a workout as well. “Trying to remember everything is one of the hardest parts,” Ann admitted. “But I hope it’s helping with my memory too.”

Finding friendship and fun

The social side of the class is equally important to Ann. She and her fellow participants often enjoy a chat and a cuppa, in the cafe following their sessions. Ann commented:

It’s such a good friendly group, it’s wonderful coming – I feel as if I’ve known them for years – everybody is so kind, and I’d hate it if I couldn’t come!

Give it a go

To anyone thinking of giving the group a try, or taking up a sport or activity in their later years, Ann has this advice:

I’d recommend it to older adults – just come and give it a go, you’ve nothing to lose. I think people would enjoy it – so yes, just give it a go!

The Older Adults class at One NK currently runs on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 3 – 4pm. You can learn more about North Hykeham Tae Kwon Do club on their Facebook page or website.
