Exploring Lincolnshire: Walking routes for everyone

May is National Walking Month, the perfect time to get moving and explore the great outdoors across Lincolnshire. With longer days and milder weather, it’s an ideal opportunity to enjoy the scenic walking routes our county has to offer. Whether you’re heading out for a short stroll, a family day out, or a longer adventure, there are plenty of ways for everyone to get active and enjoy the benefits of being outdoors this May.

Take a look at some of our favourite suggestions below:

The Lincolnshire Wolds

The Lincolnshire Wolds offer miles of open countryside with scenic trails and stunning views, making them a perfect location for nature lovers and walkers alike.

A community favourite is the Walesby from Tealby circular, often described as the county’s classic hill walk. Starting in the beautiful village of Tealby, long regarded as one of the prettiest and most picturesque villages in the country, much of the route follows the Viking Way and passes the ironstone church of All Saints (home to memorials of the Tennyson family). This route is a must for those looking to combine scenic views, local heritage and a bit of challenge.

Whether you want a leisurely stroll with the family or a more challenging trek, the Lincolnshire Wolds website has a selection of walking routes to suit all abilities.

Boston Walks

A hidden gem when it comes to walking, Boston hosts some incredible routes for all nature enthusiasts and walkers. Shortlisted in the 40 best Boxing Day Walks 2022, the Boston Waterways follows a circular 12-mile flat route that starts in the centre of Boston, at the Guildhall, and heads towards the Havenside Country Park. This route highlights Boston’s history, its unique waterways and its green spaces.

Other fantastic routes include Jessops Jaunt, Frampton Marsh Loop and the Water Rail Way, which takes you from Boston to Lincoln.

Spa Trail

The Spa Trail is a scenic, accessible and traffic-free route suitable for wheelchair users and families with pushchairs. Stretching for 3 miles, the trail follows a flat, surfaced bridleway along part of the old Horncastle to Woodhall Junction railway line and sections of the Horncastle Canal. Spot wooden, stone and metal sculptures along the way, referencing local history and wildlife.

Refreshments are available in Horncastle and Woodhall Spa, with toilets located in Horncastle (St Lawrence Street) and Woodhall Spa (Spa Road). Find out more about the Spa Trail on the Visit Lincolnshire website.

Coastal Walks

Lincolnshire is home to miles of beautiful coastline just waiting to be explored. Some local favourites include Chapel Point, Anderby Creek, Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve and the England Coast Path – Skegness to Mablethorpe.

Whether you’re looking for a gentle stroll along sandy beaches or a longer coastal walk, you’ll always be rewarded with open views, fresh sea air and the chance to connect with nature.
