Active Mums, Walking

Meet Courtney – founder of Hot GRLS Hike

Following on from Volunteer’s Week we’re shining a spotlight on one of our county’s dedicated volunteers helping people to move more.

Courtney  Clare is a 24-year-old volunteer bridging the gap between everyday women and the outdoors.  Courtney’s journey began with her own struggles with confidence.  After experiencing bullying growing up and not feeling comfortable in traditional fitness spaces, exercise was never part of her life, but everything changed when she became pregnant with her son.

“If I don’t do it now, when am I going to do it?”

Courtney began walking and exercising during pregnancy with the motivation of wanting to be an active mum, able to get outdoors and enjoy time with her child.

Taking the first step

When her son was just four months old, she started hiking, it felt accessible, enjoyable, something she could build into her life.   From there, everything began to shift.

Through walking and hiking, Courtney lost over 30kg. But more importantly, she transformed her confidence and her relationship with herself.

As her own confidence grew, so did her desire to help others.

Courtney knew how intimidating it could feel to try something new, especially  without  support or visible role models.

“Growing up in Lincolnshire especially, if your family aren’t outdoorsy, it’s not something you can just go and do without inspiration.”

With this in mind, Courtney wanted to create a space where women like her could feel  encouraged and supported to take their first steps. What started as a small meet-up with a group of her online coaching clients soon became something much bigger.

In January 2024, Hot GRLS Hike was born.

More than just a hike

What began with just 10 women has quickly grown into a thriving community of hundreds, all connected by a shared goal: to feel better, together.

Despite the fun and playful name, the message behind Hot GRLS Hike has meaning.

“It’s about making people feel confident and empowered, whatever ‘hot’ means to them.”

For many women, this is the first time they have felt included in an active space. Some may never have received a compliment or felt like they belonged before. The group challenges traditional ideas of who ‘fits’ in outdoor activity and opens the door to those who may have previously felt excluded.

The power of volunteering

Despite balancing life as a single mum working full-time, alongside continuing her training into the public sector, Courtney runs Hot GRLS Hike entirely  voluntarily.

From organising hikes, brand outreach, managing online communities and supporting attendees, the time commitment is significant.

Events are kept low-cost or free wherever possible and at times Courtney even covers the costs herself.

“I don’t regret a single penny, seeing the impact is worth it.”

Courtney’s work highlights the power of volunteering to create real change.

By giving her time, she’s helping women overcome barriers, build confidence and feel part of something positive.

Take your first step
